So, to stay healthy, we must completely avoid it in our diet, right? False! There is also the right kind of cholesterol that is essential to our health. Let’s first see what cholesterol is and how it affects our body.
What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a chemical compound that the body needs to build cell membranes and hormones such as estrogen and testosterone.
Cholesterol is a fat-like element that provides energy to our cells to function better. It is extremely important for our body to perform various daily functions.
The liver produces about 80% of cholesterol and the rest comes from food sources such as meat, poultry, eggs, fish and dairy products. Foods from plants do not contain cholesterol.
The cholesterol content in the blood is regulated by the liver. After a meal, dietary cholesterol is absorbed by the small intestine and metabolized and stored in the liver.
Since the body needs cholesterol, it can be secreted by the liver.
If too much cholesterol is present in the body, it can build up in deposits called plaque on the inner walls of the arteries, forcing them to shrink.
